What is a facial lift?
A facial lift, or facelift, is a surgical procedure that improves visible signs of aging in the face and neck, such as:
- Sagging skin on the face causing looseness
- Deepening of the fold lines between the nose and the corners of the mouth
- Fat that has fallen or disappeared
- Development of jowls on the cheeks and jawline
- Loose skin and excess fat in the neck, which may appear as a double chin or “turkey neck”
The loss of youthful contours in the face can be due to various factors, including thinning skin, loss of facial fat, gravity, sun damage, smoking, as well as genetics and stress.
Other procedures that can be performed in conjunction with a facelift include brow lifts and eyelid surgery to rejuvenate aging eyes. Fat transfer or fillers may be suggested to replace lost fat volume. Skin treatments such as IPL, dermabrasion, peels, or laser may be offered to improve skin quality and texture.

How long does a facelift last?
The results of facelift surgery can last up to 10 years, while a thread lift typically lasts between one and three years. However, because the thread lift procedure is so low-risk, patients who are pleased with their results may choose to have a new set of temporary sutures placed once the old ones are absorbed by the body.
How many peeling sessions are needed?
The number of treatments required to see results depends on the condition being treated. If you are addressing issues such as sun damage or acne, multiple treatments will be necessary. Some improvement will be visible after each peel, but typically a series of 6 peels is needed to see the full effect.
How long does swelling last after a facelift?
Every surgery, no matter how small, is accompanied by swelling of the surrounding tissues. The amount varies from person to person, but it always seems more pronounced on the face due to the looseness of the tissues and because even a small amount can distort facial features. Do not be alarmed if one side of the face is slightly more swollen than the other. This is common and usually resolves within a few weeks.
The swelling that is normally expected is usually proportional to the surgery involved. Swelling around the eyes, cheeks, face, and even the neck and chest is not uncommon. This is the body’s normal reaction to surgery and eventual healing. Swelling will begin on the day of surgery and will not peak until 2-3 days after the operation. Swelling will decrease rapidly after the third day. The skin on the face may feel tight for a while due to the swelling. It may interfere with your smile, but this will resolve within a few weeks.
