Burns are a specific type of injury of the soft tissue and its adjacent structures, caused by physical agents, chemical substances, electric currents or radiation. The severity of the burn depends on the temperature of the medium that caused it and the time the victim was exposed to it for. Another factor of severity is the location of the injury on the body, the size, depth, age and person’s state of health.

The treatment given for a burn depends on its depth and its cause. The main aim when it comes to planning therapy to cure a burn is to restore the lost tissue. Whether this involves encouraging the natural regeneration of the cells, avoiding any type of infection in the less severe cases, or using skin implants in cases of burns where there is no way for the tissue to regenerate by itself.

Science has advanced a lot in research and nowadays it is possible to grow skin cells to make grafts on very severe burns. In the same way, research has developed numerous sterile materials to dress the affected areas in order to prevent infection which is, as we’ve already mentioned, the main concern when it comes to treating a burn.
