Blepharoplasty
This consists of a functional or cosmetic surgery procedure for the purpose of reshaping the upper or lower eyelid, removing and/or repositioning excess tissue as well as strengthening the surrounding muscles and tendons. When there is a significant amount of skin on the eyelid, the skin can hang over the eyelashes and thereby cause the loss of peripheral vision. The external and upper parts of the field of vision are the most commonly affected and the condition can cause difficulty with activities such as driving or reading. Patients with less excess skin can undergo a similar procedure for cosmetic reasons, to improve the bags under the eyes and reduce the wrinkling of the skin.
Blepharoplasty is carried out via external incisions made across the natural lines of the eyelids, such as the lines of the upper eyelids and underneath the eyelashes of the lower eyelids, or on the inner surface of the lower eyelid. It is an outpatient surgery since it is not necessary for the patient to remain hospitalised and the recovery is quick.
